Best Hostels to Stay in California

read the post
You're planning a 3 week trip to the West Coast and don't know where to start? Let me help you sort out your accommodation, because I know how it can be stressful when you do not know where you'll be sleeping. Especially during high season you may want to book in advance your room in order to avoid sleeping in your car!

I can see the little adventurer in you but trust me, you will thank me for booking that dorm room in advance rather than running errands in San Francisco, being rejected by every hostel fully booked!

Let's get cracking...

Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco
Perfect location downtown SF with FREE wifi and breakfast every day (yummy pancakes and maple syrup!). They have lots of common rooms where you get to meet lots of backpackers.

Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe
The best way to enjoy Lake Tahoe is with a tent! There are about 20 campgrounds around the basin where you will pay very little for a tent space. Most of them come with bathroom and fire pit.

los Angeles

Beverly Hills, Los Angeles
LA is a huge city where it can take hours to get from one point to another, especially if you are wandering by bus. So if you want to make the most out of this city I suggest you pick a central location for your hostel. The perfect one you need is the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Blvd. Perfect location in the heart of Hollywood, relatively close to the Hollywood sign and to central station where you can get buses and metro to the Beaches such as Santa Monica and Venice Beach. They have a pool bar and a balcony over Hollywood Blvd where at night it's first seat to the show!

san diego

Pacific Beach, San Diego
And now I've kept the best for the end. Out of all the hostels you will book on your west coast road trip there is one that you MUST not miss (I advise you book it in advance especially if you are more than one). Welcome to the best hostel on the beach: Banana Bungalow Hostel.

Free breakfast, terrasse on the beach, party every night, amazing atmosphere of the coolest backpackers in the world, bike rentals, trip to Tijuana Mexico, Beer keg, taxi to the airport, trips to downtown SD or La Jolla etc. This hostel has everything you need to be in heaven! Wherever you will be in North or South California every cool backpacker will tell you about this hostel and trust me you would not want it to be fully booked once you get there!

Before you plan your trip to the US though, make sure have all of the correct documentation needed to enter the US. Whilst on your travels around the US, some of us can enter the country using the ESTA Programme . The ESTA is valid for up to 2 years, allows for up to 90 days of travel around the US per trip, normally takes around 72 hours to be granted; which is a lot easier than obtaining a visa.

All you need is a valid electronic passport and be from one of the countries eligible for this programme!

Have a safe trip!
